Mediation/Conflict Resolution
Oftentimes conflicts in the community can be resolved through mediation services. Mediation is a method of dispute resolution that enables parties in a dispute to talk with one another in an informal, confidential setting, and to reach a mutually acceptable agreement with the help of a neutral third party mediator.
The Dispute Resolution Center of Central Michigan provides mediation services and training. they serve individuals and businesses, resolving matters such as consumer/merchant disputes, breach of contract cases, neighborhood disagreements, property owner/resident problems, employer/employee issues, home buyer/seller disputes, and some types of family matters, just to name a few.
Mediation is a process that brings together disputing parties in the presence of a trained, neutral third party to reach their own negotiated agreement. The third party mediator facilitates the discussion, but does not act as a judge or offer any opinion as to who may be right or wrong in a dispute. It is up to the people involved to decide what an acceptable solution is for them. During mediation, each person involved in the dispute explains the problem as he or she sees it, and presents ideas on how the matter can be resolved. The mediator works with both parties to defuse volatile emotions, communicate in a constructive way, examines facts and options, identifies needs and possible trade-offs, and generate a written, legally binding agreement.
This is one of twenty-one agencies funded by the State Court Administrative that offers mediation, conciliation, facilitation, and arbitration services as an alternative to court. The Dispute Resolution Center of Central Michigan is located in Lansing and serves Ingham, Clinton, Eaton and Ionia counties. They can be reached at:
